Centenary Camp 2007 - One World One Promise!

The East Lancashire celebrations where hosted at Bowley Scout Camp, with over 1300 campers and 500 Beaver Scout day visitors.

In preparation the Leaders and the Beavers Scouts designed their own "Baxenden" T-shirts, so that they would stand out in the crowd, additionally, we all had a "paw" in designing one for Jennifer, our District Commissioner which we presented to her after the opening ceremony!

The programme for the weekend was outstanding, with activities for every age and ability, some of these included:- dunk tank, mobile climbing wall, inflatable rainbow slide, jousting, aerial runway, displays by the emergency services, kayaking, planetarium, wet sponge throwing, target shooting and many indoor crafts.

All participants received a birthday tea and celebrated together with games including a giant conga and pass the parcel!

Evening celebrations began with districts holding there own camp fires and traditional songs and prayer, followed the main event with an amazing display of fireworks, music and dance, mini shows starring beavers, cubs and scouts and a poignant selection of photos that had been captured throughout the day.

The atmosphere was electric, and every camper will receive a souvenir DVD of the weekend celebrations to keep as a memento of the fantastic occasion!

Beaver Scouts Akeema Shield

The Akeema Shield took place at Bowley Scout Camp on Saturday the 28th April 2007. This is an annual "mini-olympics" style competition for the Beaver Scouts, with teams participating at District level. Our team from 1st Baxenden took part along with 5 other teams from the Hyndburn District.

Each team took charge of their own base and included golf target shooting, egg and spoon race, bean bag target shooting, penalty shoot out, box and broom and the obstacle course supervised by Audrey (BSL) for 1st Baxenden.

Alas, our Beaver Scouts didn’t win the competition but they did have fun and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and the fortuitous good weather.

The winning team “Loyola Oswaldtwistle” where presented with a shield by the ADC Beavers (our very own Tracy Shaw) and will go forward to represent Hyndburn District in the East Lancashire County Competition later in the year.

Baxenden Beavers - St Georges Day Parade

St George's day is celebrated on the 23rd April with the majority of celebrations taking place on the nearest Sunday. Saint George became the Patron Saint of The Scout Association, as Robert Baden-Powell believed that he set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance.



In preparation for the event, our Beaver Scouts made shields and swords to wear during the district parade, which took place on Sunday 22nd April 2007.



The parade was led by St George on horseback followed by Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Ranger Guides, Brownies. Each section carrying their own section flag.

The service was held at St James Church, Accrington. Each of the Laws where read by a Beaver, a Cub and a Scout and representatives from the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. The Promises where also renewed, led by the respective Commissioners.

Two of our Beaver Scouts also received their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award presented by the Deputy Mayor.

Baxenden Beavers - Easter Fun

We’ve come to the end of another term and the beaver scouts have worked really hard and achieved four new “activity” badges. These have been undertaken in stages over a period of weeks both on and off base and include the following: Emergency Aid 1, Health Eating, Health and Fitness and Faith.

So, after all this hard work, it was time for the beaver scouts and leaders to let their hair down.

This entailed a visit to Bowley Scout Camp for a traditional Easter egg hunt and not so traditional camp fire songs in the lodge - cordially helped along with warm drinks, hot cross buns for the adults and squash and chocolate Easter cakes for all the children (hospitality very kindly provided by our scouts).

Of course what truly made the evening entertaining was persuading all of the parents to join in with the leaders and go head-to-head at the egg and spoon race - needless to say here that the BSL leader cheated and the "leaders" team consequently forfeited the race!

All in all we had a fun filled evening and both the beavers and the leaders are looking forward to another fun packed term after the Easter break!

Baxenden Beavers - District Football Competition

The Hyndburn district football competition was held on Sunday 18th February 2007 in the Sports Barn at Bowley.

Four teams entered including, All Saints Dunkenhalgh "A" and "B" teams, St Paul's Barnfield and 1st Baxenden.

We all had a really fun afternoon, with great sportsmanship shown by all the teams. The event was refereed by Steven Simpson, of Baxenden Cubs, who did a sterling (non biased) job. We are proud to report that 1st Baxenden where runners up, after playing exceptionally well, and winning all their games prior to the final match. All beavers who took part received a certificate of participation. The winning team All Saints Dunkenhalgh "A", will go through to take part in the county competition later this year.

Baxenden Beavers - Centenary Year of Scouting

Scouting is now the world’s largest voluntary education youth movement, spanning over 200 countries. There are more than 28 million scouts in the world today and this year we are celebrating the Centenary Year.

There will be many events taking place throughout the year, the first major event was the Founders Day Service which some of our Beaver Scouts attended, this took place at Blackburn Cathedral on the 22nd February 2007. This was a service of thanksgiving for our founder Sir Robert Baden Powell who began the Scout Movement, 100 years ago. The service was led by the young scouts and was attended by all representatives of the scouting family across East Lancashire, including former scouts and leaders.

The East Lancashire Centenary Camp is being held at Bowley Scout camp over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. All members of the scouting family from beaver scouts to explorer scouts, leaders and helpers from East Lancashire Scouts are invited to attend for the celebrations. Further information will follow.

Year Books:

Our beaver scouts are developing their own personal year books to help them commemorate this important year of scouting. The year books are being updated on an ongoing basis, and will include photographs, keepsakes, crafts and annotations from many of their weekly activities, work towards their badges and all events that they partake in and throughout the centenary year.

The aim of our colony is to provide fun and adventure for our beaver scouts: - we play games, make things, do experiments and explore the world around us.

We provide a varied and balanced programme that help young beaver scouts achieve their full physical, intellectual and social potential as individuals. Our programme incorporates many of the badges that beaver scouts are able to achieve over their two years, before moving on to becomming cub scouts. Many of these will include activities off base; such as trips to the emergency services, local museum, scout camp and exploring local countryside.

• The colony is open to boys and girls aged six to eight years
